The main type of videos I saw when looking for technology in the classroom involved using social media rather than a specific type of technology. Here were some of the videos I watched: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aaYIvdv4jFs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_pIK7ghGw4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOTEQVYDPpg The last one was a TEDxTalk but still dealt with the same concepts. I'm focusing on the first two videos as they both had social media being used in the classroom. 1. What is the purpose of the lesson - is it an intro to new material, review, extending learning, etc? The purpose of the lesson was to extend an academic conversation on a work of literature that they are reading and also to create a whole class conversation through the use of social media such as Twitter and Facebook. The students were answering discussion questions directed at a specific hashtag the teacher provided. 2. Ask yourself: How do you know the students are learning? I could tell the students were learning because they were actually responding to the other tweets and it was not just random tweets about nothing but actually pertained to what they were reading. I can definitely see how some students would not be fully engaged in what they were saying and simply tweeting just to get one out there. But from what I've seen in the classroom, I have a lot of students who do not like to speak in front of others so this is a great way to get them to participate in the classroom. 3. Ask yourself: What is the teacher doing? I.E. What elements of the lesson (pedagogy, modeling, questioning techniques, etc) did you observe? I did not get to see a full on video where the teacher was teaching any part of the lesson but only got to see how the teacher was directing the questions. Had I seen how this teacher first implemented using Twitter in the classroom I know that he would have modeled a sample tweet and response. The teacher does use questioning techniques but does so solely through Twitter. 4. Was there anything different about them from “traditional” learning? Could you potentially use this lesson? It was slightly different than traditional learning the only difference was how they were responding. Instead of responding face to face they were responding to each other online. I definitely could use Twitter in my classroom for the same reasons.
